June’s Nursery

This is a post I’ve been waiting to write for a while now, and I have to preface it with the statement that this room is definitely not 100% done. I’ve been putting off writing about June’s nursery because I really wanted it to be finished before I actually shared it, but life is as it is, and five months later I still haven’t ‘finished’ the room. This is partly because I decided to really take an actual break while I was home on maternity leave instead of packing in everything I could fit into 9 weeks, and I’ll never regret that decision, but since I’m back at work full time again, it’s a bit harder to get projects done around the house. Plus it’s freezing outside and the couch can be so inviting…

But I digress. The room is 90% done, and I’m really happy with how it’s all come together. I’ll get to the 10% still-to-do as soon as I can, but for now… Juniper’s nursery:

In case you’re new to my blog, or just want a reminder, this room once looked like this:

After a lot of wallpaper stripping and painting, I temporarily set it up as a bit of a sad little catch-all room, with some spare furniture:

Nursery Before 2

Yes that is a curtain tacked up at the window. Suffice it to say we’ve come a long way from there. The first real use for this room was as Vera’s nursery when she was a baby, before she moved to her “big girl room” one door over:

I really love comparing those photo with the photos of June’s room, because they are so similar, yet so different. Just like my girls. We started with all the same furniture, in the same arrangement, but with very different color schemes and decor. I loved Vera’s nursery, but I really love June’s nursery too.

If you remember from several months ago, I repainted this very old hand-me-down dresser for the third time since I’ve had it. It’s still going strong, and although it took a few coats to cover up the teal, this bright chartreuse/citron color is so perfect. It’s SO bold, and that’s exactly what I wanted. I paired it with deep plums, inky blues, black and white throughout the room, and got just the fun and unexpected color scheme I was hoping for when everything came together. I really wanted the overall feel of the space to be just as bright and fun as Vera’s room, but also totally different and unique. Mission accomplished.

One of my favorite things in the nursery is the custom made cot-quilt by Kerri at Rosalee’s Room. Guys, I was probably the most difficult client ever, because it was such a different color scheme, and I had this exact vision of the right tones in my head. Kerri and I went through rounds and rounds of fabric swatches and I’m pretty sure she exhausted her sources before we found just the right shades, but she was so patient with me and so easy to work with. I could not be happier with the finished result. The day June’s quilt arrived in the mail (all the way from Australia!) the whole room came together. Seriously, this piece made it real and I am still so in love with it. (BTW… if you’re in love with it too, I’ve just noticed that Kerri now has a quilt based on my color scheme listed for sale in her shop! Yay!)

As for the rest of the decor in the room, I’ll put together another post with all the sources soon. This one is already getting a little long-winded. I’ll wrap up by sharing my plans for finishing the space off.

Perhaps you’ve noticed that I’ve strategically neglected showing one half of the room… because that is the space where my vision hasn’t quite met reality yet. Part of my plan for this space was to bring in some natural wood tones to help balance out the bright citron colors. So eventually the other side of the room will house a floor to ceiling book shelf in the same style as the wooden shelves I made for my office space on the main floor. I’d also like to eventually replace the old wobbly ceiling fan in here, and I’m hoping to get new carpeting throughout the second floor at some point… but who knows when that will happen.

Those shelves are really the last big piece of the nursery puzzle though, and I can hardly wait to fill them up with books and toys for little Junie. I anticipate it will be spring before that becomes reality, when things warm up enough to stain wood again and I have a little more free time (being a basketball coach’s wife means being a single parent for a good portion of November-March). So until then, just go with me on the other 90% of the room, ok? :)

So that’s June’s nursery space. I hope you like it!

Is that a full size crib? I have one that looooks exactly like it… its a DaVinci mini crib that turns into a twin size, which is what I’ll be using it as in the next coming up weeks. Its an awesome crib. If not, its still lovely and looks great, if its a regular size one, I luuuuv it. I also went with yellow… grey and turquoise colors for my sons nursery, well his nook on the side of our room! Lol. By the way what happened to the upper part of a china cabinet you redesigned? That’s how I found your blog. Reason I’m asking is bc I don’t know what to do with my half. Its an “antique” from Broyhill, I kinda don’t want to give it away! Yet I’m decluttering my home, life, and all. Happy holidays, your blog is great!

Thanks so much! It is a full sized crib and it turns into a toddler bed and then into a full sided headboard and footboard eventually. And I love your color combo! :) Soooo.. Funny you should ask… the upper part of my china cabinet had been the topic of hot debate around here for quite a while. Mostly because it’s been living in my garage and preventing the hubs from parking his car in there. Oops. I never have gotten around to it because I have never been in love with the style of the china cabinet as a whole but didn’t want to give it up because it was my moms. Long story short, I am in the process of a China cabinet update post that will be up this week, and the blue one found a new home while I found something I really love. Win win!

Wow that’s awesome! Lol, poor hubs! I actually got rid of mine, the top only. Never liked the design, it was also my moms, she said, “get rid of it, its the best thing I ever did!” Lol, geeee thanks mom! Thanks! I’ll be checking your new stuff out. Sorry it took long to reply, but, I bookmarked your page, I had so many that I couldnt find it, aaaagh, BUT AS I was decluttering my bookmarks I made sure to find your page and definitely keeping it. Good luck!
