Pimp My Furniture: A Big Girl Brass Bed

Long ago (seriously, almost three years ago), I made one of my favorite ever discoveries at a local antique store. This beat up, old brass bed, twin sized, for $30. Score!!

Here’s a close up of it so you can see the shape it was in when I found it. Which was not great.

I had absolutely no use for it at the time, but that’s never stopped me before, so I brought it home, and it’s been living in my garage for the past few years, just waiting for its time to shine. Well that time is now, little bed. :)

I finally decided Vera needed her very own brass bed, and got down to business. At the time of this makeover, we were in the process of moving her into a new room, and this was a great excuse to tackle the project I’d been thinking about for so long.

I love antique brass beds, and images like the ones below made me briefly consider painting it a fun bright color.

But, as much as I LOVE color, since there is already so much color in V’s bedding, curtains, and decor, I though that another color in the room would just be overkill. I think the traditional brass will be timeless and work well in any future redecorating of her room as she grows. Plus, like I mentioned, I just love brass beds. Images like these confirmed my choice.

So I set out to just give the old bed a fresh face. I wasn’t sure what type of paint was already on it (read: I was scared of lead poisoning) but it was chippy and just generally beat up. I didn’t want to disturb it too much, just seal everything in, so I just scraped off any terrible areas and primed the whole bed. Twice. Then I chose a brassy metallic paint to mimic the original finish. And I love how it turned out. The bed still shows imperfections, which I like. It’s no fun having an antique brass bed if it looks like you just bought a replica off the shelf. ;) So the little dents make me smile.

Here she is all set up in Vera’s room.

I actually owe you some updated photos, since these are borrowed from this older post on V’s new room and I’ve since rearranged things in there to give her some more floor/play space. I have a few more changes I’d like to make though, so I haven’t gotten around to taking pictures of the room as it actually looks now. One of these days I’ll have to clean up all the toys that are generally strewn around and get on that!

Happy Monday!

Would you mind sharing the paint/primer you used and where you bought them? I love the way it turned out!

Thank you! I actually don’t recall the specific brands/names, but I’m sure I bought them at Lowes and I just used a spray primer and metallic bronze spray paint over that. Hope that helps!
