Twin Tuesday: Max and Maya

Happy Tuesday! Today’s featured twins are Max and Maya (I love those names!!) who are the son and daughter of Lonnie and Alisa. This family from Utah is now living in Auckland, New Zealand, and Alisa documents their adventures on her blog, Rusted Sun. What an amazing adventure, right? I’m always so jealous of people who get the opportunity to live overseas!

Max and Maya just turned 4 years old, and they also have a 10 month old baby brother named Trent. So you know that’s a busy household. I’ll let Alissa tell you a little more about her twins:

Do twins run in your family?
My father has cousins who are twins. My husband also has cousins who are twins, but I don’t really consider either of those as “twins running in the family”. I get this question often, and I usually see it as an indirect way of asking if we used Assisted Reproductive Technology(ART). Yes, we did. I took Clomid for six months, then did a round of intrauterine insemination (IUI) without getting pregnant. After a few months we started trying again. I took Clomid and did one more round of IUI and became pregnant.

When did you find out you were expecting twins and what was your reaction?
Due to the fact that we were seeing a fertility specialist I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks, and found out I was pregnant with twins. My husband had joked about getting a two-for one, but I was still shocked. Clomid only has about a 10% chance of causing twins so even our doctors were surprised.

How did you go about picking names?
Having boy girl twins I wasn’t too worried about our kids getting confused for one another, but I did want their names to work well together. I always loved the name Maya. We had a harder time coming up with Max’s name, but in the end it was perfect.

What is the hardest part about having twins?
The hardest part about having twins is the exhaustion. Any mother can testify to the lack of sleep that comes with a newborn. Multiply that by two babies, then make it even harder when the twins are pre-term. It is also hard having to coordinate sleeping schedules. Toilet training twins was pretty tough too.

What is your favorite part about having twins?
I love that Max and Maya are such good friends. When they were babies I loved seeing them snuggle up together and now that they are older I love listening in to their conversations. I love that they share and are empathetic because they are used to being aware of the other’s needs.

What advice would you give to other parents of twins?
Make sure that you get your twin to sleep at the same time. If one baby wakes up then wake the other so that hopefully they will go back to sleep again at the same time.

And since your kids are old enough to answer, I’d love to know what their favorite or least favorite part about being twins.

What’s your favorite part about being twins?
Max: We get to play with all the presents. Everyone can do different stuff. It is ok to do different stuff. It is nice to have someone with you at nap time. I like that we can climb trees together.
Maya: You get to share the same birthday on the same week. You turn the same number. We can pretend like Trent is twins with my baby dolls. People how aren’t twins don’t have someone to play with. I like that Max likes to go to zoos with me. Max, what is your favorite thing about me?

What is hard about being twins?
Max: It’s not hard to be twins. But sometimes it is hard to sleep when someone is doing a project and talking.
Maya: I don’t know. Max always fights with me, that is the only hard part. A huge thank you again to Alisa (and Max and Maya) for taking time out to answer questions for us! Make sure to visit and get to know them on her blog! Have a great Tuesday!
